the power of positive affirmations
You might think that positive affirmations are just something that’s nice to hear at the end of a yoga class, or a naff thing to write on a pillow… but actually positive affirmations can have a big impact on your mindset and beliefs. Seeing or hearing a phrase repeatedly embeds it in your unconscious mind (which controls your response to potentially challenging circumstances - like birth). That means if you keep telling yourself ‘birth is scary, birth is unsafe’, then when it comes to it, your unconscious mind will believe that - and respond accordingly, releasing adrenaline and going into fight or flight mode… which in turn can hamper the body’s production of the hormones your body actually needs to give birth!
But if you consistently repeat positive affirmations (either by looking at them on affirmation cards, or hearing them) like ‘birth is safe’, ‘I am strong and powerful’, ‘each surge brings me one step closer to my baby’ then you will help shape the beliefs in your unconscious mind in a positive way. That means when it comes to it, your brain is far more likely to be able to remain calm and collected, enabling you to feel more relaxed, able to make decisions and protect your mindset throughout birth.
