why i hate new Years resolutions
OK so don’t hate me for this one! But I DO NOT make New Years Resolutions. And here’s why. A few years ago I came across the theory of intuitive eating. I’m not going to be able to do this topic justice (but definitely Google it!) but basically a key element of it is - if you ban yourself from doing something, or eating something, or impose tough restrictions, your brain will get MORE obsessed with that thing. You know the feeling - you tell yourself you won’t eat chocolate for a week and then all you can think about is that bar of Galaxy calling your name. Restriction breeds obsession. I am such a fan of intuitive eating and ever since then, I’ve applied that premise to everything in my life - restriction or extremes doesn’t work. Moderation and consistency DO.
And I find it hard to make New Years resolutions that don’t create restrictions or extremes. So instead I create a vision board. That’s images of what I want my life to look like in the year ahead - so instead of creating a punishing resolution (“I have to run two 5ks every week”), I add a picture of someone having fun running a race with their friend. The positive imagery is far more effective than the restriction which I will inevitably break. And it works - in 2024, I ran my furthest and fastest ever, with no extremes or restrictions.
So WHAT does this have to do with pregnancy and birth?
Well - we know that positive imagery works to motivate you and change your mindset about a challenge or situation. So why not make a vision board for your 2025? You might want to include images of the birth you’re hoping for, of pregnant women practicing yoga or visualisation, of a gorgeous newborn scrunchy baby. It’ll boost your oxytocin and help build positive images for your pregnancy and birth.
But… a vision without a plan is just a dream. So make some intentions as well, to create that vision. They don’t have to be super strict. Instead, maybe consider trying to add more time for deep relaxation with your visualisation tracks. Add a little more prenatal yoga to your weekly routine (try my online yoga club?!). Stick some affirmation cards around your house. And if you really don’t know where to start, reach out for a discovery call, or a power hour where you can receive some 1:1 support.
Happy Christmas and Hello 2025… this is YOU AND YOUR BABY’S year!
